Most LGBT groups use the current 6 color rainbow flag to identify themselves and we in Philadelphia use a six color Liberty Bell.
The original rainbow flag consisted of 8 colors which were intended to reflect the diversity of the LGBT community
and each has a symbolic meaning:
There is nothing unique in the symbolic representation of colors in the rainbow flag.
In the United States flag, the colors were specifically chosen as well:
During the manufacture of a multitude of flags for San Francisco’s gay pride parade,
hot pink material was not available in sufficient quantity.
Because the flags were to be equally divided on either side of street poles,
the turquoise was dropped to make it an even three stripes on either side.
That is how we arrived at the current six color rainbow flag
and why you sometimes see the hot pink and turquoise colors included.
